THE MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANY: APPLE

13 Mar

Wohooo, i’m quite nervous knowing that this post will be scored as my mid-term test, wish me luck guys! By the way, now i’ll elaborate some cool facts about…. APPLE!!

Apple is an American multinational corporation that designs and markets consumer electronics, computer software, and personal computers. The company’s best-known hardware products include the Macintosh line of computers, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. Apple software includes the Mac OS X operating system; the iTunes media browser; the iLife suite of multimedia and creativity software; the iWork suite of productivity software; Aperture, a professional photography package; Final Cut Studio, a suite of professional audio and film-industry software products; Logic Studio, a suite of music production tools; the Safari internet browser; and iOS, a mobile operating system. As of May 2010, Apple is one of the largest companies in the world and the most valuable technology company in the world, having surpassed Microsoft. For further details will be explained in four specific aspects:

#1 APPLE’S TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION

Macbook

There are some significant reason why people should love Macbook. Unlike Windows based computers which can’t be used with macintosh OS, Macbook works with Windows. It also opens and works with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint,  so it’s compatible with the PC world. Macbook also provides some cool softwares such as iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband. Those are very addictive to use, it helps us to manage photos, do video editing in a very easy way, and learn or even compose our own music!

The other sophisticated fact about Macbook is, it doesn’t get PC viruses! It is designed with security in mind, Mac OS X Snow Leopard isn’t plagued by constant attacks from PC viruses and malware. Every Mac is highly secure right out of the box, so we can safely work — or play — without interruption.

Apple approaches environmental responsibility through our products. It embraces environmentally friendly design. That’s why a Mac is  energy efficient, free of many toxins, and highly recyclable. Because Apple designs both hardware and software, Apple can reduce environmental footprint in ways others can’t. For starters, a highly efficient power supply reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your Mac. Unlike a lot of PCs, a Mac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power — even between keystrokes. A Mac doesn’t contain a lot of toxic materials. All Mac displays are mercury and arsenic free, and the internal components are free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). And also, When a Mac reaches the end of its long life, the materials are made from  highly desirable materials.

#2 APPLE’S PROCESS INNOVATION

I’ve browsed the internet to find out about Apple’s process in designing, I found some and below is information i found on an article….

Pixel-perfect mockups are critical. This is hard work and requires an enormous amount of time, but is necessary to give the complete feeling for the entire product. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, pixel perfect means the designers of a piece of Apple software create an exact image—down to the very pixel (the basic unit of composition on a computer or television display) —for every single interface screen and feature.

There is no “Lorem Ipsum” used as filler for content, either. At least one of the senior managers refuses to look at any mockups that contain such “Greek” filler. Doing this detailed mockup removes all ambiguity—everyone knows and can see and critique how the final product looks. It also means you will not encounter interpretative changes by the designer or engineer after the review, as they are filling in the content—something I have seen happen time and time again. Ultimately, it means no one can feign surprise when they see the real thing.

10 to 3 to 1. Take the pixel-perfect approach and pile on top of it the requirement that Apple designers expect to design 10 different mockups of any new feature under consideration. And these are not just crappy mockups; they all represent different, but really good, implementations that are faithful to the product specifications.

Then, by using specified criteria, they narrow these 10 ideas down to three options, which the team spends months further developing…until they finally narrow down to the one final concept that truly represents their best work for production.

This approach is intended to offer enormous latitude for creativity that breaks past restrictions. But it also means they inherently plan to throw away 90% of the work they do. I don’t know many organizations for which this would be an acceptable ratio. Your CFO would probably declare, “All I see is money going down the drain.” This is a major reason why I say you can’t innovate like Apple.

Paired design meetings. Every week, the teams of engineers and designers get together for two complementary meetings.

Brainstorm meeting—leave your hang-ups at the door and go crazy in developing various approaches to solving particular problems or enhancing existing designs. This meeting involves free thinking with absolutely no rules.

Production meeting—the absolute opposite of the brainstorm meeting, where the aim is to put structure around the crazy ideas and define the how to, why, and when.

These two meetings continue throughout the development of any application. If you have heard stories of Jobs discarding finished concepts at the very last minute, you understand why the team operates in this manner. It’s part of their corporate DNA of grueling perfection. But the balance does shift away from free thinking and more toward a production mindset as the application progresses—even while they keep the door open for creative thought at the latest stages.

Moreover, not only in designing process, Apple also has succeeded in turning their company into a brand, with products that have unified design principles. Compare Apple to Microsoft: Microsoft isn’t a brand, it’s just a company that creates software for other companies to use. Apple on the other hand doesn’t allow other companies to use their software. This has allowed them to create a design that is instantly recognizable, and the black/silver modern look that Apple’s products have has became their sort of trademark colors, showing modernity and class.

Further proof that Apple is a brand comes from the fact that their website and logo match their product designs, and have changed to match them in recent times. I think that Apple is a brilliant example of how people will buy a product because of how it looks and how it’s branded. People will keep buying Apple products because, well, they’re Apple products, and generally they look amazing.

Apple has a branding strategy that focuses on the emotions. The Apple brand personality is about lifestyle; imagination; liberty regained; innovation; passion; hopes, dreams and aspirations; and power-to-the-people through technology. The Apple brand personality is also about simplicity and the removal of complexity from people’s lives; people-driven product design; and about being a really humanistic company with a heartfelt connection with its customers.

#3 APPLE’S PRODUCT INNOVATION

Through the years, Apple has tried hard to keep their product freshly innovated as time goes by, as well as the advancement of technology. Below are the pictures of Apple’s evolution:

#4 APPLE’S BUSINESS MODEL

Business models describe the process how proposed value offered by an organization to customer. It briefly describe company’s capabilities and ability  to create, market and provide value  & relationship. The business itself has aim to generate sustainable profits and revenue.

Value proposition used by Apple is focusing on the sophistication of the product, including the integration of features, function and decent design offered. The product then distributed to customer through distribution channels. Their distribution channels are established through Apple retail stores that already spread all over the world. There are over 300 official Apple retail stores in 10 countries. Apple also has its own website to publish, distribute and promote its product, it is equipped with iTunes/Apps Store. So, it will be very helpful for those who want to buy music or softwares through online transactions. Moreover, To enhance customer relationship Apple provides customer facilities such as iTunes, online service assistant, Apple special events, special price for students, Applecare, etc. And also, core capability and good configuration activity is not separated from the Partner Network help from satellite operators, Internet operators, telecom operators, ad placements and retailers.
In the end, this business model has aim to generate profit, with the cost structure which may include marketing cost, research costs, and marketing costs. Meanwhile Apple can generate profit through revenue  generated from the product selling through direct and online transactions.

WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT INNOVATIONS!

13 Mar

Through Tami Yuwono’s perspective

These are incredible stuffs that I cannot live without! I deeply relied on these, and it’s already become an addiction! lol!

Computer

Since I touched this stuff for the first time in the late 90s, I was instantly realized that some part of my life will depend on it. When I was a kid, it’s a perfect mate to kill some time with some of its games, and also I spent much time playing Paint too,  to make some fancy doodles.

And until now, after over a decade I still have addiction on it. I can’t even live without it a day, I’m someone who too much depended on internet too, geez. And yeah, this invention already help me in years, to do some school tasks, project assignments, or even some random things.

Communication Gadgets

In this era, who doesn’t have a cellphone? well we gotta admit that almost all the people we know are using it. Lately, communication gadgets is developed as trend flows by. Now, it’s not only a tool to communicate by only making a call or by sending text message. Lately there’s invention of smartphone, a kind of cellphone which has some sophisticated features, function and design. Nowadays we can synchronize our email inbox with it, or browsing the web with it, or do some chats with it and use some fancy application to access some social websites (e.g. Twitter and Facebook) And I think the invention of communication gadgets are the reason why the difference of time and dimension are no longer exist as problem in communication 🙂

Transportation

Hundreds year ago, you might use a horse to go somewhere. Or, probably you don’t have any so you go by foot everywhere, oh geez such a pain. But today is a very different era, it’s the era with massive growth of development that involved high level mobilization of its people living within. People go somewhere else everyday. Even a 7 year old child goes to school every weekdays, meanwhile the adults go to their offices in the morning and get stuck on traffic jam at the night after. Well, whatever it is, now we are living in a very mobilized life pattern.

Nowadays, we should say thanks for the outstanding result of automobile evolution.   Because we can go anywhere easily, and also it’s reachable for everyone. People may have private cars, or even use public transportation facilities. So, people can mobilize everywhere else.

By the way, about in the late 19 century, car was firstly invented. But for today people it only looked like an ugly black box. Meanwhile how cars may look like in this age.

Sophisticated

Sexy

Fat car, eh?

Snail-Car (-_-")

Musical Instruments

This can’t be an exception! this is a must to be listed in this post. Hello! what world will be without music? it may be a plain life we’re living in. And I must admit that I should give kudos to those people who ever invent musical instruments. And of course there are  so freakin’ many kind of it…

Well, that is all! Check my second version too btw!

Cheerio 😀
